I'm From The Us, And I'm A Rookie Who Likes Danes

Recommended Posts

Greetings all my Aussie compatriots. I love Great Danes and will be buying two in the spring. I've read some discouraging stuff out there concerning danes as pig dogs, but the breed fits me and I fit the breed, so I'm stuck with em. I love to hunt, and have never boar hunted before, but we've got a big feral hog problem -or blessing, as I like to think of it- in Missouri, US where I live. I'm slapping down some decent money for a pair of pups that come from parents that have been joint, heart and thyroid tested, and whose grand parents are 13 and 14 and not dead yet. I'd hate to have a couple dogs like that and never try em out on some razorbacks.

Bottom line, I'm pumped about catching some pork when my pups grow up, and I need help. I'm clueless, I haven't used dogs for catching anything but fleas thus far in my life. Look for me, USDanefan, in the other forums here in the next few days to see if you can impart some knowhow on a greenie from the States. Cheers, friends -Tim

Hey mate welcome

hmmm in all honesty the danes in a pure form can be a tad soft and knock up very quickly due to all the weight they have to carry around with them also they lack in some speed which can be vital at times.

Have you thought about a first cross as they make a great cross and i have alot of time for them and if you are serrious about hunting then i would definately suggest them as a cross

Here is a pic of my Dane X Mastiff bitch

Beautiful bitch. To my mind, your mastiff cross is probably much, much closer to the original German boar hunting specialist that Danes started out as. Over a hundred years of show conformation breeding by ridiculous people that want their dogs to match a written appearance has likely defiled their stamina-supporting physiological traits and dulled their minds. I think a breeding program with existing Danes bred for endurance and hardness could produce that Duetsch Wunderhund the Dane started out as. If I ever have the money, I intend to do just that. Maybe I could sell some if anyone wanted a 60kg running machine with excellent nose that could pin a 130kg pig to the ground?

mate welcome. Good luck with the danes just be prepared for a long wait while they mature enough to be entered. Most dogs are started over here by running them with experenced dogs you might find it harder to find someone overthere that hunts the way we do, as most fellas that I have spoken to over there hunt with curs or hounds as bay dogs and drop in a bulldog to make the catch I dought a pur dane could spend that all day keeping up with curs as they try to stop a hog. Not trying to discourage you But I think you will have to be out there with your dogs on your own. I hunt with pur ridgebacks and they are a far bit quicker than a dane but I also run a staghound in my pack for when the extra speed is needed. Also take a good look at the protection we put on our dogs Ie neck collars and breast plates danes are a big dog that will deffenately need that type of protection.

good luck
