  1. Deerhounds are great for it. We have a deerhound ourselves, all though we use her for pigs, relatives of ours have used them on foxes plenty of times to great success. Mind you, they are a very tall dog. But there isn't much faster than them
  2. G'day, It'd be a good idea to first get a pre-working dog that is a proven finder as your first dog, will make life so much easier for you. I wish I had done that now. There's plenty around
  3. G'day mate, welcome to the site! Just because you didn't see them doesn't mean they're not there! Even the big bastards can hide bloody well. With a few more numbers into your dogs they will soon start smelling them out for you making life even easier. The wet is usually a good thing for pigs. Where there's water there's pigs. Sounds like you're in the right area for it anyhow. Good luck with it all.
  4. Gday mate, welcome to the site! Hope you gain as much from it as I have so far Tristan
  5. G'day bud, welcome to the site. Where are you from? Pig hunting is also a bit of a family thing for us too
  6. G'day and welcome to the site mate, There's actually a surprising amount of pig hunters in Mildura and the surround area, including myself and my brother. With the spread of pigs after last years floods there's also quite a bit of property available to hunters so play your cards right and with the correct amount of respect you shouldn't have an issue getting a property owner to let you on. Best thing you can do at the moment is get to know a few people on the site here and gain as much knowledge as you can. Tristan
  7. G'day guys and girls, I'm a new bloke to the forum and I'm from near Mildura although I'm at uni in Melbourne (always looking for an excuse to get home and hunt). I'm 20 and have only been in the sport a few months. My younger brother (Mildura deerhounds) joined not long ago and hooked me onto the site. We hunt with a pure bred deerhound bitch and my catahoula X staghound bitch which is just starting to find although isn't quite sure of herself yet. We also have a bull arab dog in training coming up and looking good. Whilst we have been successful with both numbers and sizes of pigs in our short time we were mostly going on dumb beginners luck and now we are looking to expand into more serious hunting involving finding etc. Any advice on how to get my bitch finding (we don't have a dog already finding to train her with) would be greatly appreciated, she definitely has it in her. Cheers guys, looking forward to sharing info, photos and stories with you Tristan Smith, Mildura, Victoria
