INDICATING DOGS POINTERS

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

New to site, was recommended by Burners to check you guys out. Have a Hungarian Vizsla pup that is 10 months old and a work in progress.

Mostly Family pet but want him to accompany me in some hunts especially when alone in forests locating deer etc.

was wondering what GPS unit and collar to get as don't have much experience with these units. Do carry my Garmin Rino but unfortunately not compatible with the dog collars.

what do you guys recommend in forested areas i.e what collar and unit. i have checked out the prices online and it seems they don't miss you. looked at the Garmin Astro 430 but i cant find to many reviews. has anyone purchased from the states or overseas? Do the units and collars work here in Aus.

Will look through site for info and hopefully pick up some pointers from you all along the way.

cheers, spiz

I have an Australian model 430, have had it for a couple of years now and cant fault it. Be aware the 430 comes in Australian and American models, they both work, but technically the US model is illegal due the frequency it operates on. Personally i'd buy an Australian Model locally as warranty service etc will be much easier. The GPS wire on the collars is a bit weak, buy the most robust collar protector you can get and you will be fine.

Thanks Nt Wombat,

Just the type of info I'm after. Tossing up which way to go. I hear good and bad from reading on this forum but I guess he wont be used for pigs but rather scenting and pointing out game for me on the trails so may not be to hard on the equipment. Will need to get something within next cuople of months when weather cools down and the wriggly sticks have gone to bed as I don't want him bitten from his inqusitiveness.

I've used a mates Alpha and it was just as good as the astro, the only downside was after getting mud on your hands the touch screen is hard to use, The training function would be handy on a young dogs though. And shooting deer is gunna keep you, and therefore the screen a lot cleaner than sticking pigs
