Amstaff For Pig Dog?

Recommended Posts

im new to this and based in brisbane and am the owner of a 17 month old american staffy. im looking at getting another dog when im in a more suitable place and im look at a BA but for now im stuck with the one. he's a good dog and weighs around 30 atm and is over knee height. i know there far from ideal for pigs but am still really keen to get started with what i have and see how i go.

i have heard that there have been pigs caught at gatton lately. is this comon knowlege?

if anyone has any advice that might help me that would be awesome.

cheers!

From my experience they aren't finders unless you have a pig in the spotlight or in the open in the day and it can see it. Once they have hold they don't let go though. Bad thing when you have to drag a pig 200m back the ute and it's got lockjaw on the pigs neck.

My bloke is cross Bull arab American Staffy. He goes alright and can find and just started quad finding still very early days on the quad finding.

Yes they are hard to get off but just need work my bloke will stay off a tied pig 80% of the time still working on that part. He didn't see a pig until he was 18months old.

One thing you will have is they give there all mate they don't hold back.IMO

cheers angusace did you find him hard to train or did he pick it up pretty quick? also was he agressive toward other dogs? minw is getting a bit that way but im tryin my best to train it outa him

i have had a few staffies over the years, they are very hard dogs and will not back down or bail, they straight in head first, the staff's i had picked it up very quick, when i was a kid i use to hunt on me 2 wheel moto and he would sit on my lap and when we seen a mob of pig's i would seperate the boar, run him for a bit whilst trying to hold on to him then let him off, i caught hundreds of pig's this way. he even jumped off when i was doing maybe 60/70 km/h he just tumbled a bit then keep chasing the pig untill ne caught it. as for being aggressive towards other dogs, some can want to fight any dog they see, then some can get along with any dogs just depends on how the brought up.

cheers mate,

yeah i socialised him with dogs since he was a pup and then one day he just decided he wanted to blue. he did get attacked once and couple dogs have had goes when he was a puppy so maybe thats it. only happenned last couple weeks though and i got a bark collar on him when in public to try stop the growling. im spewin but cos if he keeps this up i wont be able to take him out with other ppls dogs. im working on the stock proofing this weeknd at a mates farm and hopefully be able to take him out in next couple weeks.
